Canadian Firearms Safety Course
Outline
Course Length: Minimum 10 hours.
The Canadian Firearms Safety Course (CFSC) is designed to apply to the broadest possible spectrum of novice firearm users. Existing firearm safety courses across Canada have a proven track record in the reduction of firearm related incidents. However, most of these courses have been designed and delivered for firearms use in a specific activity. The CFSC is an introductory firearm safety course intended for all new firearms users. This course is open to all individuals age 12 and over.
Course Handbook:
A course handbook has been developed to enhance and reinforce the room instruction. Each student must have a copy. With 9 major sections plus an introduction, a glossary and an appendix, students will be familiarized with its' content and layout during the program. It is used to augment the live training and as a reference for the student. (See the "Student Manual" tab on the menu; left)
Course Objectives:
By the end of the safety course, participants will be able to:
- handle firearms and ammunition safely
- use firearms and ammunition safely
- identify the social responsibilities of firearms owners
- comply with firearms laws
- store non-restricted firearms and ammunition safely
- display non-restricted firearms safely; and
- transport non-restricted firearms safely
Course Content:
The Canadian Firearms Safety Course is comprised of a general introduction and 9 specific lesson plans. The individual elements are as follows:
- introduction to the Vital Four ACTS, and PROVE
- introduction to firearms
- basic firearms safety
- ammunition
- operating firearms actions
- safe handling and carrying of non-restricted firearms
- firing techniques and procedures for non-restricted firearms
- care of non-restricted firearms
- responsibilities of the firearms owner/user
- safe storage, display, transportation and handling of non-restricted firearms
Canadian Firearms Safety Course Examination:
The test is comprised of two parts. A written portion, and a practical portion.
Written Test:
- 50 questions - true & false and multiple choice
- tests student's knowledge of all aspects discussed in the training course
- requires a mark of 40 out of 50 questions correct (80%) to pass
Practical Test:
- student must demonstrate safe firearms handling procedures with firearms and ammunition
- use ACTS PROVE procedures
- includes loading and unloading firearms (dummy ammunition) with all action types
deductions made for unsafe handling; unsafe direction, incorrect ammunition, trigger unnecessarily on the trigger guard
- student must obtain 40 marks (80%) to pass practical portion
- automatic failure for pointing firearm at a human during the test

* When submitting an application for a firearms licence, individuals are required to provide their photograph. As a service to our students, their photograph may be taken on-site. The photo will be professionally colour corrected, cropped to application specifications, and provided to them at days end.
