Ontario Hunter Education Course 
Course Outline
Course Length: Minimum 12.5 Hours (Reduced to 10 hours for "One Stop" program)
The Ontario Hunter Education Course (OHEC) is mandatory for all Ontario residents who are applying for their first "Hunting and Fishing" Outdoors Card.
OHEC is designed to provide you with all the necessary knowledge and skills to hunt safely and responsibly.
Course Handbook:
All students must pay for and be provided with their personal copy of the Ontario Hunter Education Manual at the beginning of the course. Exceptions may be made for individuals from the same household. This manual provides the foundation for all instruction and it is important that the student be completely familiar with its contents. Throughout the course the student will use the handbook as a reference and to "follow along" as different topics are discussed.
While the manual contains material that will be taught and examined as part of the OHEC, it also contains additional related information that provides good reference material.
Course Objectives:
By the end of the Ontario Hunter Education Course, participants will be able to:
Have a broader appreciation of the various reasons people hunt and a better understanding of his/her own reasons for deciding to become a hunter
Basic understanding of wildlife management, ecology, ecosystems and habitat
Understand the importance of responsible and ethical hunting as it relates to the future of the sport
Comprehend the different types of laws associated with hunting, the authority of Conservation Officers, and understand the importance and contents of the Annual Hunting Summary Regulations
Know the appropriate clothing and equipment required for hunting, including Basic first aid and survival kits
Recognize the basic causes, symptoms and treatment of hypothermia
Realize the various techniques used to hunt game, including the importance of wind, sound and smell, and the importance of pre-hunt scouting
Appreciate the importance of shot placement for effective, humane harvest
Understand the steps in cleaning game animals and preparing trophy animals for taxidermy
Know and understand the 10 rules of hunter safety
Value an appreciation for the short range nature of bowhunting, and understand different bow designs and their parts and accessories
Understand the identifying characteristics of common species of game animals and their habitats
Course Content:
The Ontario Hunter Education Course is comprised of 12 specific lesson plans, including the following elements:

Hunting Hunter Education Course Examination:
The examination is designed to evaluate an individual's hunting-related knowledge and based on all the materials taught in the course.
Written Test: (conducted immediately following the course)
Consists of seventy (70) multiple choice questions Must obtain fifty (59) correct answers out of seventy (70) to pass the examination Incorrect answers will be reviewed with the student
Practical Test:
There is NO PRACTICAL portion to the examination.
Note: Hunting Wild Turkey in Ontario
In addition to a Small Game Licence, (and a Firearms Licence to hunt with a gun) you must also have a Wild Turkey Hunting Licence to hunt wild turkey in Ontario. To obtain a wild turkey licence, one must first complete a Wild Turkey Seminar. The window of opportunity to take the in-class seminar in your area is usually quite narrow; January - April.
The Ministry of Natural Resources is now offering a DVD through the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters for $35, which you can review and then complete the turkey hunting test with us. You must order your DVD online and then attend a qualified hunting instructor to complete your test. Simply attend one of our testing sessions, produce your online DVD purchase receipt to us and successfully complete your test. There is no additional fee associated with the testing.
We encourage our hunter education students to order this DVD prior to your class and complete the turkey test while you complete your hunters test.
If you are a licensed hunter and are now wishing to complete the turkey hunting test, please email us for a time that we can conduct the test for you. We are usually able to administer the test any Sunday that we are teaching but you must contact us for an exact date and time.
